How trees grow
All trees grow taller, wider and deeper. They grow taller when new cells happen at the tips of the match. It grows deeper when roots in the ground collect water and nutrients. Root grows at the very tip and expands into new soil. Trees also grow wider in their trunks and branches. The tree trunk is the one that keeps the tree from falling.
